The pull to know myself through stringing together sentences and paragraphs has been with me for as long as I can remember.
At a very young age, I began keeping a journal. My maternal grandmother gave me my first one when I was seven. I discovered early on that writing fulfilled my desire to understand myself and make sense of what I was feeling inside. If I was upset, anxious, or overly excited about something, I always felt better after writing in my journal. Writing settled my mind and eased my heart.
Today, when I feel overwhelmed, lost, or incredibly passionate about something, putting pen to paper always clarifies a situation and illuminates the path forward. It’s the same thing when you finally make space for your creative work. You carve out a couple of hours or a few days out of your routine for it, and you get sick or you are too tired to focus or tap into your creativity. It means your body needs rest, attention, and support.
We are so conditioned to be busy, to fill up our days with tasks that often the first time we have a chance to stop and realize how tired we really are is when we hit the pillow at night.
