Trusting yourself to show up

Trusting ourselves and our unique path isn’t always easy. It requires courage, presence, and the willingness to embrace uncertainty.

In this episode of Embodied, I sit down with my good friend and colleague Nikki Martin, a novelist, screenwriter, speaker, yoga teacher trainer, and DEI consultant, to explore the pull of destiny, the complexities of identity, and the shadow side of spiritual growth.

💡 In this hour-long conversation, we explore:

✨ Destiny isn’t about ease—it requires commitment, resilience, and self-discovery.
✨ Loss can be a portal to deeper trust in life.
✨ Spirituality should be about action, not just self-reflection.
✨ Speaking our truth has the power to shape our reality.
✨ Community is essential—we are meant to grow together.

The journey of self-discovery

From a young age, Nikki felt a deep pull toward something bigger. But the path wasn’t always clear.

“I always had a sense of this pull and this destiny and these things that I felt were meant to be mine. And I didn’t realize I was just so far from them that it was a journey to get there.”

For years, she wrestled with the idea that finding purpose should be effortless. But eventually, she learned that destiny takes work, trust, and commitment.

Loss as a portal to trust

One of the most moving moments in our conversation was Nikki’s experience of losing her father. His passing changed her relationship with fear, purpose, and trust.

“It was the single most devastating moment of my life so far, and yet there was this sacredness to it. It shook me to my core. I realized: The only thing I could control was what I did with the time I had.”

Speaking truth as a spiritual practice

For Nikki, true change happens when we speak up—whether through leadership, advocacy, or owning our personal stories. She emphasizes that authentic spirituality moves beyond self-reflection and inspires real-world action.

“Self-awareness ultimately gives us the ability to show up in the world and for each other.”

Even small interactions—responding gently or speaking honestly—can be powerful acts of spiritual practice, transforming insight into tangible change.

Trusting the process

So how do we learn to trust?

Nikki shares that trust is built through:
🌿 Being present—not chasing a distant future, but embracing where we are.
🌿 Releasing control—trusting that what is meant for us won’t pass us by.
🌿 Taking small, consistent steps—rather than waiting for the “perfect moment.”
🌿 Showing up fully—with all of our gifts, flaws, and uncertainties.
